The narrator, Perkins, is a businessman who waxes rhapsodic about his commute. He loves the journey into the city, and takes pleasure in writing out the details of his journey to share with his colleagues. One day, though, he is offended to find a new man sitting in his own compartment on the train. The man is handsome and about Perkins' age, and Perkins is deeply upset that his routine has been spoiled. As the man asks if he can light his pipe, Perkins is reminded of a boy back at school, Bruce Foxley, who was cruel and bullied him, beating him for no good reason and seriously disturbing Perkins' formative years.
